Day 1/2  Sunday - Monday
21 October    -    In transit to Lisbon (depart ABQ @ 9:00A on Sunday; arrive Lisbon at 12:20P (plus 1 day)).  Transfer to hotel.

Day 3      Tuesday
23 October    -    Lisbon
Today's sightseeing on the banks of the Tagus River includes two Manueline jewels:  Belem Tower guarding the mouth of the Tagus and Jeronimos Monastery with the tomb of Vasco da Gama.  Drive past the Bull Ring to Pombal Statue and on along the grand Avienda da Liberdade.  Then, enjoy a walk through the cobbled alleys of quaint Alfama, the quarter of the seamen.

Day 4  Wednesday
24 October   -    Lisbon-Fatima-Tomar
First stop on the northbound journey is medieval Obidos.  Go back in time as you pass the main gate in the impressive perimeter wall and walk along the narrow streets.  Continue to Alcobaca to visit the Church of Santa Maria Monastery, building in the 12th century for 999Cistercian monks.  See the elaborate tombs of King Pedro I and his Castilian lover Ines de Castro and hear how she was murdered at the order of Pedro's father.  The fishing harbor of Nazare is the perfect place for a leisurely lunch break.  In the afternoon mix with the pilgrims at the country's hallowed national shire, Fatima's Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary.  Overnight in Tomar, the historic seat of the mighty Order of the Knights of Christ.

Day 5  Thursday
25 October    -    Tomar-Porto
On the way out of Tomar, visit the hilltop Convent of Christ with its famous Manueline window. Further north, the Roman ruins of Conimbriga are eloquent testimony to centuries of Roman influence. Tour the excavations, view the well-preserved mosaics, and visit the museum. On to Coimbra, strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mondego River. After a visit to the gilded baroque library of its 700-year-old university, drive through the ancient Buçaco Forest.  Marvel at its luxurious variety of plants from various parts of the world, carefully protected for centuries.

Day 6  Friday
26 October    -    Oporto
Morning sightseeing with a local guide in Portugal’s second largest city, the bustling capital of the north. After a panoramic drive to the mouth of the Douro River, see the soaring cathedral, admire the richly decorated Church of Sao Francisco, and visit the Stock Exchange with its contemporary Arabian Hall inspired by Granada’s Alhambra. Before lunch there’s time to visit a port wine cellar where the famous wine produced from grapes of the Douro Valley is aged in huge vats.

Day 7  Saturday
27 October    -    Oporto-Viseu
Head inland to Guimaraes, often referred to as the “Cradle of Portugal” because of its association with the country’s first king, Alfonso Henriques. Next you reach Vila Real, former capital of Portugal’s northeastern region of Trás-os-Montes. Just outside town, visit the park and manor of Palacio de Mateus, whose picture graces the label of the Mateus rosé wine. From here, a scenic road cuts through the valley of the Douro River, which flows between terraced slopes where port wine grapes grow.

Day 8  Sunday
28 October    -    Viseu-Evora
Enjoy
splendid views of Portugal’s highest mountain range, the Serra da Estrela. Pass Guarda, the country’s highest city, and stop in Belmonte, birthplace of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil. Today Belmonte is a symbol of Jewish awakening. Some of its inhabitants have reconverted to the belief of their ancestors who, during the dark days of the Inquisition, were forced to accept the Catholic religion. Cross the Tagus River, enter the Alentejo plain and look forward to an afternoon break in enchanting Castelo de Vide. Time to walk through the Jewish Quarter with its white-washed houses and take pictures of the 14th-century castle. Continue to Evora, the cultural center of southern Portugal and a former royal residence.

29 October    -    Evora-Algarve
A massive wall surrounds Evora’s medieval center, classified as a World Heritage Site. A guided walking tour through its narrow alleys takes you to the Roman temple, the early Gothic cathedral, Portas de Moura Fountain, and Sao Francisco Church. Visit the Ossuary Chapel, whose walls are covered with thousands of human bones and skulls. After lunch, proceed across the arid Alentejo plain to the Algarve, Portugal’s most popular holiday area.

Day 10  Tuesday
30 October   -    Algarve
J
oin an excursion along the enchanting southern coastline. History comes alive as you reach the wind-swept promontory of Sagres, where Henry the Navigator lived and planned his overseas expansion. Only a few miles away is Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern corner of continental Europe, a dramatic cliff defying the waves of an ever-angry Atlantic Ocean. After a lunch break in Lagos, return to your hotel with time left for shopping.

Day 11  Wednesday
31 October    -    Algarve-Lisbon
Head north to Setúbal, a major port and industrial center on the north bank of the Sado Estuary. From here take the scenic route over the Serra da Arrábida and savor sweeping views of the Tróia Peninsula. Catch glimpses of the castle of Sesimbra, which recall fierce medieval battles between Christians and Moors. After crossing the Bridge of April 25th you’re back in Lisbon.

5 November    -    Lisbon-Seville
On the way to Spain, stop at Elvas, noted for a 16th- century aqueduct which still supplies this market town with water. Cross the border near the historic citadel of Badajoz and drive through Extremadura, the arid homeland of the conquistadors Cortés and Pizarro. Late afternoon arrival in the vibrant capital of Andalusia.

6 November    -    Seville
Hear your local expert’s account of the city’s role in Roman times, its conquest by the Moors in 712, and its contribution to the discovery of the New World. Admire the pools and fountains of Maria Luisa Park. Drive to the Plaza de España, the Gold Tower, and the fine Baroque building, now the university, but was the tobacco factory of Carmen fame. Visit the cathedral with Columbus’ tomb, the world’s largest Gothic edifice. Then, stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming Santa Cruz quarter.

7 November   -    Seville-Rabat, Morocco
Travel through the sherry wine region of Jerez to Algeciras and on by ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar to Africa. Along North Africa’s infamous Barbary Coast to Rabat, once a lair of the corsairs and now the country’s capital.

Day 19  Thursday
8 November     -    Rabat-Casablanca-Marrakesh
Sightseeing centers on the massive medieval battlements, the Royal Palace, Mohammed V Mausoleum, Hassan Tower and the Casbah of Oudaias. Visit the Roman relics of Chellah. Leave Rabat and follow the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean for a visit to Casablanca, Morocco’s modern seaport. See the Hassan II Mosque, a splendid monument designed to mark the end of the century. Evening arrival in Marrakesh, situated in an oasis with more than half a million palm trees.

ightseeing includes Menara Park with its artificial lake and quaint pavilion, Bahia Palace, the elaborately decorated 16th-century Saadian Tombs and Djemaa El-Fna, the palpitating town center dominated by the 222-ft-high Koutoubia Minaret.

10 November     -    Marrakesh-Fez
Enjoy glimpses of North African village life reminiscent of Beau Geste while motoring through Beni Mellal and Azrou towards Fez. Blessed with an ample supply of water and strategically situated, Fez became the capital of Morocco when the country shook off foreign rule under the Berber King Idris in the 8th century. To this day, Fez has remained Morocco’s spiritual and artistic center.

11 November    -    Fez
Take photographs of the magnificent entrance to the Royal Palace, drive through the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and travel on to beautifully ornate Bab Bou Jeloud, the traditional entrance to old Fez. Your local guide also leads you through the labyrinthine Fes-El-Bali, Morocco’s largest medina, to the exquisite Bedersa Attarine. Enjoy a 10-mile drive along the panoramic Route de Fez, stopping at its best vantage point.

Day 23  Monday
12 November    -    Fez-Cuenta, Spain
Leave the imperial city and head through the Gharb, Morocco’s most fertile agricultural area. Take the scenic route through the northern foothills of the Rif Mountains to Chechaouen, a town with a strong Hispanic flavor. Overnight in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, strategically located on the North African side of the Straits of Gibraltar.

Board your ferry for the trip back across the Straits to Europe. Cameras ready as you approach the Bay of Algeciras; the vistas of the Rock of Gibraltar are spectacular. Time for a visit to the strategic rock fortress of Gibraltar, in British hands since 1704. Hear about its turbulent history and tour the Upper Galleries, Moorish Castle and St. Michael’s Caves. Also on the agenda, of course, the colony of Barbary apes. Then, drive along the Costa del Sol to your hotel in Benalmadena.

Today, travel to Granada. This afternoon see its main attraction, the Alhambra. The graceful citadel was planned by the 13th-century Moorish ruler Al Ahamar. A fantasy of “lace in stone” surrounded by arabesque gardens and fountains, it affords superb views of the Old Quarter and Sacromonte, a mountain occupied by gypsy cave dwellers. Also amble through the exotic water gardens of the Generalife, the royal summer residence.

16 November   -    Granada-Toledo-Madrid
Through the arid landscapes of Don Quixote’s La Mancha motor north to Toledo. Spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River, the ancient Castilian capital attracts more sightseers from all over the world than any other Spanish town. A resident expert takes you to the Moorish bridge, an early synagogue, the 13th- century Gothic cathedral and the church of Santo Tomé with one of El Greco’s most famous paintings.

17 November    -    Madrid
The capital of Spain since 1561, Madrid today is a strikingly modern city. Morning sightseeing takes you to the Puerta del Sol, Plaza España with its monument to Cervantes, the Parliament, Cibeles Fountain, elegant Calle Alcala and Paseo de Castellana. Then the highlight: a visit to the palatial Prado Museum with its priceless art treasures.
