October:  (Happy 13th – we celebrate all 13th’s as that is the day we met, were engaged and married!)  We arrived in Singapore in the early evening.  We took the subway into town (what a bargain at S$1.70) and arrived at the Marriott.

October:  Singapore is a town/country with more shopping than imaginable.  You can’t go 100 yards without running into a shopping center or cluster of stores.  So, we did what you should do on your first day here – shop!  The Marriott is located on Orchard Road, the prime shopping area of Singapore, so we walked to numerous stores in the area and, yes, we bought and bought.  Great fun!

October:  Today we decided to take the Singapore Airlines Hop On-Off bus to explore more of the city.  We began in Little India where we visited the bazaar (again, great for shopping).  We then went to the famous Raffles Hotel, named for Sir Stamford Raffles, which was originally established in 1887.  It’s still the Grande Dame and one must (note the imperative) enjoy a Singapore Sling while sitting at its Long Bar.  It was delicious!  We finished our day by visiting several governmental buildings as well as St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

October:  We took off on the metro and headed to China Town.  First, we visited Peddlers Street which is famous for its street markets.  We then worked our way to Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore’s oldest Hindu Temple dating back to 1827.  Our next stop was Thian Hock Keng Temple.  This is a Taoist temple, erected in 1821, by seamen who were grateful for a safe arrival on the island.

October:  This was again a travel day as we left Singapore early in the morning for Hong Kong.  We spent the afternoon/evening relaxing at “The Pier” Lounge, Cathay Pacific’s lounge (our favorite airport lounge anywhere in the world) before catching a midnight flight to Rome to rendezvous with Linda and Vic Rizzo.
