We spent our week at Andy Myers Lodge fishing one day on Eagle Lake and then fishing the remaining five days at lakes within a short driving distance of the lodge. By going to a different lake each day, we had not only varied fishing but saw some new scenery and sometimes interesting boat launches.
On our first day out, we fished with our guide, Clem, for walleye and pike on Wilderness Lake. It was Lindy's first time using the 9 wt. fly rod so Clem was a brave man! We're pleased to report that we both caught pike and Lindy didn't catch either or Ed or Clem! We then switched to spinning rods and enjoyed walleye fishing. Of course, all fishing for us is "catch & release" so despite the walleye's reputation for being great eating, we just enjoyed the sport.
The next day of fishing (Monday) was on Eagle Lake with our guide Danny (who also happens to be the lodge owners' son). Today was strictly walleye fishing and it was again great. We boated great numbers of fish as well as some sizeable ones. On Tuesday we were once again fishing with Clem. It was another first for Lindy – fishing for smallmouth bass on the fly rod. We used a 5 wt. rod that is much lighter than the 9 wt. We had great fun as we had lots of catches and, for Lindy, it was great experience -- both casting and catching!
On Wednesday, Clem took us to his "Private Lake" – an unnamed lake which had public access from one of those 45 degree boat launches. After getting the boat in the water (and not getting any of us too wet), we again had another great day of catching lots of pike. Despite not being too large, they were still great fighters and again reinforced overall fly fishing techniques for Lindy.
Thursday was our day to fish for the infamous musky. We went with our guide, Mike, to Fluke Lake. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the morning, Ed's fly rod broke. He hadn't even made his first class when the tippet (end of the rod) fractured. However, not one to miss a day of fishing, Ed cast his rod which was now only some 7.5 feet instead of 9.0 feet long! The fish certainly didn't know the difference as he had numerous lookers and followers. However, not a single musky ever actually took the fly. Since there's very little literature written about fly fishing for musky, we'll have to keep experimenting. Lindy did manage to nail her second musky ever (the first being on Eagle Lake last year) but not with a fly rod.
On Friday, Ed's birthday!!, we once again fished with Clem on Hogg Lake. It was an extremely windy day so use of the fly rods was out. However, we again caught lots of fish and also had a birthday celebration at lunch with Clem (a great birthday cupcake) and again at the lodge after dinner. The cook had baked a large birthday cake for Ed, and it was big enough to share with everyone. What better way to age than fishing (esp. since it's said you don't age when you're fishing)!!
So, a week of fun fishing, lots of fly fishing practice and just having a good time! Accommodations at Andy Myers are in individual cabins with kitchens. However, we choose to go "American Plan" with three home-cooked meals served daily. If you're interested, contact Andy Myers at www.andymyerslodge.com.
