The third fishing lodge we visited in Chile was Martín Pescador Lodge near Chaiten ( www.martinpescadorfishing.com ). Our hosts, Frans and Anna Jansen, made us feel at home immediately.  Frans and Anna actually have two lodge sites.  This allows guests to fish different waters at the end of the week rather than staying in one area.  Both lodges are beautiful, both inside and out.  Anna is an excellent chef and we enjoyed some delicious meals as well as great company.  All in all, great fun!

DAY 1 (Saturday, March 19):  After transferring to the lodge and settling in, we went out fishing for a few hours with Mike Treloar.  We each caught a couple of fish but the rain returned.  Since it was now nearing the end of the season, it got cold too.  So, we decided to return to the lodge and relax and then give it our all on Sunday, our first full day of fishing

DAY 2 (Sunday, March 20):   Today we enjoyed fishing with Mike on the Rio Yelcho.  Despite being called “drift boat fishing” the guide really does have to work to position anglers for their best casts at likely spots the fish are lying.  We each caught ~10 fish and Lindy missed several others.  The highlight of the day was Ed’s 25”x15”, 7-8lb. rainbow on the last cast of the day.  Very nice!

DAY 3 (Monday, March 21):  Today we fished with Todd Allen, splitting our time floating the Rio Negro and the Rio Yelcho.  While Lindy caught the first fish of the day, Ed outdid himself on the Rio Negro.  He caught and released two beautiful rainbow trout.  The first was a 22”x15”, 6lb. brut.  The second was even larger – a 24”x17”, 8.5+lb. monster.  An excellent day by any standards!  Lindy did manage to land a 24” brown but it was a skinny guy.

DAY 4 (Tuesday, March 22):  We once again fished with Mike today on the Largo Yelcho.  We were in a beautiful setting but it was a tough day for fishing.  We landed only six fish between us.  It nevertheless was a fun day.  When we were done fishing, we went to Frans and Anna’s second lodge.  Our gear had all been magically transported there (thanks to Anna and her staff) so we just settled into another beautiful spot.

DAY 5 (Wednesday, March 23):  Our guide today was Frans and we split our time fishing Lago Rosselot and then floating the Upper Rio Rosselot.  We enjoyed good fishing and great company and some excellent dry fly fishing.  We both caught several nice fish and plenty of small ones too.

DAY 6 (Thursday, March 24):  We split our time on the Rio Rosselot’s small channel and the Rio Palena while fishing today with Todd.  Lindy caught several small bows on streamers.  Ed fished dries for a change and caught an 18” rainbow as the highlight of his day.

DAY 7 (Friday, March 25):  Out last day of fishing was spent on the Rio Figeroa with Mike.  This was a numbers kind of day.  We caught between 40-50 fish.  Most were rainbows in the 16-18” range.  We had lots of fun hooking, fighting and releasing these beautiful trout.

We had an excellent stay at Martin Pescador.  Both lodges are terrific and Frans and Anna are wonderful hosts.  There’s lots of great fishing in the area and each night you return to a delicious meal, fine wines and fun company!
